The Community Architect, Turning Limited Bandwidth into Limitless Opportunity
When Ashish Malla was given a small slice of his dad’s monthly internet bandwidth in high school to learn English, he stretched every megabyte of that opportunity as much as he could. Driven by a deep curiosity, he turned his limited access into late-night coding sessions, teaching himself Python by dissecting and tweaking existing scripts. “I used to download scripts from the internet, read through the code to figure out how it worked, and modify parts of it to see what changed.” His defining breakthrough came when an online friend needed a website for their business. Ashish seized the chance to build it from scratch. “That experience flipped a switch for me. What started as curiosity turned into something I wanted to keep doing, building, experimenting, and most importantly having fun!”
Growing up in a region dominated by the cashew industry, Ashish faced limited access to technical guidance. He joined a Computer Science / Computer Science and Engineering program but soon realized that it did not align with how he learned best. In searching for a path forward that better aligned with his drive, he discovered the Beyond the Binary workshop series by Hackerabad. Instead of feeling out of place, he was welcomed into a vibrant community. Introduced by seniors to Major League Hacking (MLH), he quickly found mentorship from MLH coaches and GitHub Campus Experts. Embracing the community helped the naturally quiet engineer overcome his introversion and build confidence. “I used to be the person sitting quietly in the back row. Being part of MLH and Hackerabad forced me out of my comfort zone and gave me the confidence to speak up and lead.” Now a pillar in the hacker community, Ashish has amassed over 20 hackathon wins.
Driven to pay forward the support that solidified his own path and place in the community, Ashish transitioned from attendee to community architect. Realizing how intimidated many of his peers felt by tech events, he set out to dismantle the myth that hackathons are only for experts. After volunteering at OpinHacks, he stepped up as Lead at Hackerabad to lower the barrier to entry. Ashish launched a peer-mentoring initiative where experienced hackers joined virtual hackathons alongside nervous freshmen, proving that anyone can build from day one. He went on to spearhead HackPrix S1, bringing together 450+ participants, directed Local Hack Week 2024 with over 15 workshops, and guided 100+ high schoolers across 3 editions of CodeDay Hyderabad.
Beyond organizing major events, Ashish continued expanding his leadership to help developers thrive. He served as a Postman Student Leader, Streamlit Campus Ambassador, and Defang Campus Ambassador, earned his role as a GitHub Campus Expert, and is now pursuing his MBA at IIM Ranchi where he also serves as an Executive Member on the Alumni Relations Committee. Bridging engineering, business, and community building, Ashish leverages platforms like MLH to create warm, welcoming spaces where newcomers feel supported. Whether geeking out at late-night organizer after-parties or building 8-foot cup towers during Global Hack Week mini-events just to smash them down, he keeps the spirit of hacking playful, joyful, and human.
Ashish now thrives on connecting with peers at networking events and is constantly experimenting with new technologies. Reflecting on his journey from a timid kid to an event organizer and mentor, he stays dedicated to expanding regional access to tech. As Ashish emphasizes, "I love enabling people with tech." His ongoing mission is to enable everyone to realize that "they don't need to be a pro to be a hacker and everyone starts somewhere."
