Tech for Good: How Lucas Jin Uses Code to Empower Communities

Lucas Jin views technology not just as a tool for innovation, but as a universal force for human empowerment and community support.

“When I was young, like every other kid, I admired super heroes and wanted to become like them,” Lucas reflects. “I wanted to do things that would help others and improve their lives.” Channeling his inner Matt Murdock, he originally pursued this drive through law, but soon realized that software engineering offered a much faster path to direct, real-world action. Everything transformed when he stumbled across an Instagram post for UOttaHack 6.

Stepping into his first hackathon with only introductory programming knowledge, Lucas felt the nervous tension of a beginner. Instead of barriers, he found a welcoming team and a community eager to collaborate. By the end of the weekend, his team built StudySphere - a social studying application. In that moment, Lucas had a clear realization: the world of technology gave him the exact same opportunity to make a positive and lasting impact on people's lives - and he could start doing it right away. “It showed me how the ease of accessibility within technology was so high that it wasn’t a barrier,” Lucas shares. “I saw firsthand a new inviting community where I could fulfill my dreams of helping others.”

The true potential of Lucas's hacker mindset unfolded at Hack404, where his passion for real-world impact took center stage. Driven by his desire to protect people advocating for their rights, Lucas and his team built Proteful - a mobile application that provides real-time hazard reporting by integrating the Google Maps SDK into a dynamic, interactive map. Working with React Native for the very first time, the team had to adapt quickly - a risk that paid off massively when they earned 1st Place Overall. Beyond the top award, the moment stood out as another shining example of the hacker community's supportive spirit. “Taking pictures with the judges and celebrating with my team felt so incredible because it felt like everybody was supporting us and congratulating us, showcasing just how nice the hacker community was,” Lucas shares. Experiencing that shared enthusiasm reinforced his core belief that technology is at its best when it empowers people to stand up for what they believe in.

Now a student at the University of Waterloo, Lucas actively seeks out opportunities to use his skills to empower and improve the lives of others. He served as project developer for 8 months with UW Blueprint - a design team that builds bespoke tech for local and global nonprofits. He built software for the Mississippi Farm to School Network to connect local farms with student meal programs - a mission close to his heart following years of volunteering for the Ottawa Food Bank. He plans to continue this work once he completes his current internship with Tesla.

Serving currently as an Advisor and previously as a Business Development Executive for Hack the 6ix, Lucas works tirelessly to give back to the very ecosystem that shaped his growth. Whether securing corporate sponsorships, helping guide logistics, or managing outreach, he is dedicated to lowering barriers for incoming participants and crafting the same welcoming, high-energy environment that first inspired him.

Looking back on his journey, Lucas is driven to strip away the intimidating prestige around tech and inspire others to simply start building. “I used to think that to make a difference or be successful, you had to be a genius or have years of experience,” Lucas reflects. “It’s taught me that the most important thing is to just try. Hackathons elevated me to the point where I was able to improve, learn, and help others without being special. You don't need to know everything before you start - you just need the willingness to jump in, collaborate, and learn as you go.”
