Iris Cheung, 27
Iris Cheung is proof that no matter the path you take to get to tech, there is always a place for you in this community. Previously working in law enforcement after earning a degree in Criminology and Psychology, Iris decided to enroll as a second-degree student in the Bachelor of Computer Science program at the University of British Columbia. Although she was driven by a desire to redefine her path, stepping into an unfamiliar field brought natural self-doubt. But attending her first hackathon hosted by MLH instantly affirmed she was where she belonged: “Hackathons gave me a space where I could explore this creative freedom, a place where curiosity is an advantage.”

Whether they were creating an event to bring tech education to their area, working to make the tech world more inclusive, or programming a project with a positive impact on society, they have all inspired us. Like you, they are students or recent graduates who are using their knowledge to make the world a better place.
